I recently posted a story on Medium, in which I bemoaned my lack of progress on the platform. In what has pretty much become the norm in recent years, life gave me the finger back, as said post, which took over an hour to write, has had one solitary view.

I’ve been thinking that maybe I’m just not cut out for this platform. Maybe I’m a bad fit, like Ann Robinson taking over as the host of Countdown, or Christiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United.

What makes things worse, is that of my posts whose views have grunted and groaned up the ladder into double figures, the vast majority of those views are external.

I’m not complaining about not getting paid for external views — to do so would mean a radical overhaul of the site. It’s just that to me they are a, well, little more than a nuisance. In fact, you could say I’ve got the external views blues. Because that pleasant surprise of seeing a healthy return on a story can quickly turn to disappointment on viewing the stats. Here’s how it goes.

My Heart Sinks

After seeing a spike in views for one of my stories, I delve into the stats, in a state of excited anticipation, to investigate. Once there, my heart sinks, as I come across what looks like a giant blue…
