A handwritten note in black ink on a sheet torn from a spiral bound notebook. it rests on a black table
A Dear John for David (My own photo)

I look at the ink
On my arm and I think
Of the day that I got the tattoo
It was worth all the pain
Just to see your sweet name
There was nothing I’d not do for you

I look at the ink
On the card and I think
How you loved me that Valentine’s Day
A huge scarlet X
And a rhyme about sex
Done in your cute, innocent way

I look at the ink
On your note and I think
How heartless to end it like this
Something snapped inside me
When I learned that now he
Feels those lips that I once used to kiss

I look at the ink
On my statement and think
What a terrible end to this tale
I sent him to Hell
But I lost you as well
For my long-term future is jail
