How well do you know the Oscars?

Everyone knows something about the Oscars, that annual outbreak of glitz and glamour, stretch limos, bling and celebs on the red carpet. The very first Academy Awards ceremony took place on 16th May, 1929 — before the term Oscar had even been applied to the statuette. But more on that later.

I thought it might be of interest to post some Oscar related trivia with a twist. I have put together five snippets relating to the famous statuette. Four of these statements are entirely true, while the other is an unproven red-herring. Can you pick out the imposter?

And the nominations are:

A: Immediate Family

Liza Minnelli is the only Oscar recipient whose parents were both winners of the award. On winning the Best Actress award for Cabaret (1972), Ms Minnelli joined her father, Vincente Minnelli, who took the Best Director in 1958 for Gigi. And mother, Judy Garland, who received an honorary award in 1939.

B: A Star is Born

The statuette got its nickname when Margret Herrick, librarian and director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, remarked that it looked like her Uncle Oscar. Prior to this, the trophy had been known as the Academy Award of Merit, but from 1934 on…
