An interesting post. I didn't know that the term latchkey kids was coined during WW2, but it makes sense. When I was a kid in the 1960s, the scandal newspapers used the term latchkey kids to describe those who came home from school to an empty house because Dad was still at work, and Ma was at the bingo.
