A New National Anthem
But it could be bad news for footballers.
A common viewpoint I’ve seen on my social media recently, runs along the lines of “I’m not a royalist, but I respect the Queen for her long service to the nation.” And, that’s pretty much how I feel right now. To put my views on royalty into modern day parlance, meh!
I think that part of the reason for my lack of interest in royalty may stem from watching television in my formative years. I wanted to see car chases, with robbers wearing sharp suits; I wanted the latest pop tunes, performed by my favourite bands, and I wanted football in large doses.
What I didn’t want was footage from some poorly-lit old church, where people in robes performed ancient ceremonies, while a choir sung hymns. And afterwards, that golden carriage, silver on our monochrome TV sets, was never going to screech around a bend like Simon Templar’s Volvo P1800 coupe. Welcome to Dullsville UK.
Speaking of that carriage, I also have a strong aversion to the ornate. I wouldn’t give house room to furniture with intricately carved features; give me clean lines any day. In some ways, my feelings towards ornate furniture, and other items, such as fancy silver teapots, and cutlery with delicately carved handles, reflects those I hold towards royalty: I appreciate the effort, but it’s just not for me.
